Acoustic Foam

Specialist acoustic foam has set properties that will enable optimum sound absorption. The main factors being an open cell structure of regular cell size and optimum hardness and density. These factors enable the foam cells to disrupt the transmission of sound incident applied to the surface. The sound waves when hitting the foam, have to travel through thousands of air pockets. The sound waves then gradually lose energy and this reduces the power of any waves that bounce back from the tile or bass trap. Acoustic foam is formulated by the manufacturers to optimize these qualities and is sold solely for acoustic applications. Standard upholstery and packaging foams, closed cell foams and semi open cell foams are made for a totally different end use and therefore will have totally different characteristics and in no way could be substituted for foam manufactured for acoustic applications. Always look for the NRC values to ensure the acoustic foam meets your needs.

Foam Profiles

All our Tiles and Bass traps are cut on CNC computer contour cutting machines. Which work to very accurate cutting tolerances. This means the tiles profiles will match up with each other exactly when put in situ. This is the process most leading acoustic foam manufacturers now use for cutting tiles.

The problem with the old traditional eggbox convoluted profile tiles, which was the standard before computer aided foam cutting machines were used was that the edges of the profiles did not match and although a single tile looks OK, when they are placed together they do not line up with each other well. This process of foam cutting is mainly used today for packaging foam and for mattress toppers and in situations where the aesthetics and overall look of the profile are not an issue.

We have Independent test results for our acoustic foam tiles and bass traps, Please download this document to see our foams NRC Values

If you wish to see a comparison with other well known tiles NRC values this has been tabulated by www.soundspec.info and can be seen Here

Below is a table showing our tiles our tiles average NRC values

Please Note all polyurethane foam is inherently reactive to uv light and can fade and discolour with light over time, this will have no effect on the foams acoustic performance and physical properties.

All Foam supplied is fire retardant, and meets Schedule 1, part 1, (Fire) (Safety) Regulations, S. I. 1324 of 1988 (amended 1989)(Amd 1993), and are also suitable for applications requiring FMVSS302. The fatigue class is based on BS3379.

The Tiles can be attached with spray adhesive, evo stick contact or evo stick impact adhesives.

The acoustic foam grade we use is specifically formulated for acoustic applications by one of the UK's leading specialist foam manufacturers. it has been used for many years as the basic sound absorption foam due to its excellent performance for a wide range of applications. It may be used for acoustic enclosures, studio paneling, air handling units (AHU's), air conducting, cab linings and just about any other application where a controlled acoustic sound level is required.

CNC Profile Cut Grey Acoustic Foam, 25kg / m3 Density Foam which has a controlled permeability and open cell structure that gives optimum acoustic performance for a foam of this density. Hardness 125 to 155 Newton's

Acoustic foam is the easiest option to help deal with medium to high frequency sound quality problems, listed below are common issues that can be improved with the use of acoustic foam.

  • Reverberation
  • Flutter Echoes
  • Primary Reflection
  • Secondary Reflection
  • Mid Frequency standing waves
  • High Frequency Standing waves
  • Modal Problems

Sound Absorption How it works

Acoustic foam Sound Absorption
Open cell acoustic foam is proven to have  good sound absorption properties and is aimed more towards the medium and high end of the frequency spectrum. Tiles having a profiled front face aids the inherent acoustic properties of the material by two methods.
Firstly the profiled surface will deflect the incident waves omni directionally, weakening them as they are rebounded. Secondly the surface area being increased will also allow more sound to be absorbed into the foam. this reduces echoes dramatically. and if a lot of acoustic treatment is used a "dead" sound can be achieved this is often used in vocal booths.

Low Frequency Issues
To deal with low frequency issues much larger volume of foam is needed and thicker foam tiles need to be used in conjunction with acoustic foam corner bass traps, There are also more structural methods of helping with low frequency which is diffusion rather than absorption.

Sound Proofing
Many customers have asked for sound proofing foam. some suppliers even advertise acoustic foam as soundproofing foam, please be aware that acoustic foam will do very little to reduce form from traveling from room to room, and will do next to nothing to make a drum kit quiet in a house. It is a medium used to make a balanced listening environment, and is aimed achieving the ideal sound balance within a room for listening and or recording
